Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 3, 2026
Barcodey is a barcode wallet app for loyalty, membership, and gift cards, made by Filip Vitas. This policy is short because the app is built so there is almost nothing to write:
The short version
- Everything you save in Barcodey stays on your device.
- Barcodey has no accounts, no ads, and no trackers — nothing you store in it is ever uploaded anywhere.
- The only third-party component is Google's ML Kit barcode scanner. Scanning is fully on-device; the library may send anonymous diagnostics to Google (see Data sharing and third parties).
- Barcodey itself sends us (the developer) nothing — we cannot see your cards, your photos, or anything else. Apple may share anonymous crash reports and aggregate download statistics with us through App Store Connect unless you opt out in iOS Settings; these contain no card data and cannot identify you.
What the app stores on your device
When you use Barcodey, the following is saved in the app's private storage on your phone:
- Cards — the name, barcode number, barcode format, color, and optional expiry date you choose for each card
- Folders — the folders you create and which cards are in them
- Documents — the name and photos of documents you add (IDs, licences), plus the optional number, expiry date, and barcode you enter
- Photos — photos you attach to cards or documents, downscaled and stored as files in the app's sandbox
- Settings — appearance, default view, sort order, reminder and lock preferences, and the last screen you had open
Deleting the app deletes all of it. If you use iCloud Backup (iOS) or Google backup (Android), Barcodey's data is included in your device backup like the rest of your phone — that backup is yours, held by Apple or Google under their own terms; we cannot read it.
Permissions and device features
- Camera — used only to scan barcodes and to take photos you attach to cards. Scanning happens entirely on your device; camera frames are processed locally and never uploaded.
- Face ID / fingerprint — optionally used to lock your Documents folder. Biometric checks are performed by iOS/Android; Barcodey never sees your biometric data, only a yes/no unlock result. The Documents lock is a screen lock, not separate encryption — your data is protected by your device's own storage encryption.
- Screen brightness — temporarily raised while a barcode is displayed so scanners can read it. No data is involved.
- Notifications — optionally used to remind you before a card or document expires (off by default). Reminders are scheduled entirely on your device by the operating system; nothing is sent anywhere.
Backups and moving to a new phone
You can export your wallet as a JSON file at any time (Settings → Export backup). The export is delivered to the destination you choose via your device's share sheet or download — Barcodey does not send it anywhere itself. The backup file contains your card data in plain text, so treat it like the cards themselves. Importing a backup reads the file you select and nothing else.
You can also move your wallet to another device by showing an animated QR code that the new device scans. The transfer happens screen-to-camera between your two devices — nothing goes over the internet — but the codes are compressed, not encrypted, so do it somewhere no one can film your screen.
Data sharing and third parties
Barcodey shares nothing you store in it with anyone, and has no advertising or crash-reporting SDKs.
Barcode recognition uses Google's ML Kit, which runs on-device. Camera frames and your barcodes are never sent to Google. The ML Kit library itself may send anonymous usage and diagnostic data (such as a device identifier and performance metrics) to Google, as described in Google's privacy disclosures — this is the only network activity in the app, and it includes nothing you store. On Android, Google Play services may also download the barcode model to your device.
The feedback and "suggest a brand" links open github.com in your browser, outside the app. GitHub then sees your IP address and anything you submit there, under GitHub's own privacy policy. Nothing is sent unless you tap through.
Children
Barcodey does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children. There is nothing in the app that collects data regardless of age.
Your rights
Because all data lives on your device and only you can access it, requests to access, correct, or delete personal data are satisfied directly by you: view or edit anything in the app, or delete the app to erase everything.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of Barcodey ever changes any of the above (for example, an optional cloud backup), this policy will be updated first, and the change will be clearly announced in the app's release notes.
